Grow Native Canada
Ark Gardening
Almost everyone in the west knows the concept of Noah's Ark - something like: "collect a male and female of every animal onto the Biblical Ark, to release them after the water recedes, rebuilding populations around the Earth". That's a nice model for how we can all restore local habitat, keeping in mind the word "local", which in this case is also a synonym for "native". We are talking about Native Plants, Native Insects, Native biota.
We can treat our gardens as a version of Noah's Ark, filling it with Native Plants. As these plants mature, their seeds will be spread by wind or animals, to rebuild native bio diversity. At the same time, non native biota should be removed, thus limiting their competition and spread, starting with the most invasive.
The pamphlet shown below is an elaboration of Ark Gardening ideas, that were first printed for a Burlington Ontario audience, and includes a list of trees native to that area of Canada. Note that you may have to research your own specific list for your region.
